Michael Jordan’s Ferrari 550 Maranello Sold for a Record $2.7 Million
The custom 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello had a seat fitted for Jordan and inspired the Air Jordan 14, according to Joopiter.
- Michael Jordan's 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello sold for a record-setting $2.7 million at auction on Wednesday through Joopiter Auctions, concluding bidding on the custom grand tourer.
- Jordan purchased the vehicle in May 1997 after winning his fifth NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls and customized the driver seat to fit his 6'6" frame.
- With just 1,900 miles on the odometer, the Ferrari features a Rosso Barchetta finish and retains its original "Tipo F133A 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V12, producing 485 horsepower through a six-speed gated manual, with a top speed of 199 mph," Joopiter noted.
- Bidding more than doubled Joopiter's $1.3 million estimate, following a week of high-profile memorabilia sales. On Tuesday, a jersey Jordan wore in the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $12.26 million.
- Nike designer Tinker Hatfield used the vehicle as inspiration for the Air Jordan 14, incorporating design elements like the Prancing Horse badge. The car resurfaced this year after 24 years out of the public eye.
