Met Office Reveals the Best Places to Watch the Solar Eclipse in the UK (and When)
Devon and Cornwall are expected to see up to 96% of the Sun covered, and the Royal Observatory Greenwich will livestream the event.
On Wednesday, August 12, the UK will experience a significant partial solar eclipse, with the Moon obscuring up to 96 per cent of the Sun in western regions, marking the most extensive coverage visible from Britain in 54 years.
While the path of totality will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, Britain sits just outside this path, creating an eerie twilight effect across the country during the early evening.
Experts warn against using regular sunglasses, as they provide inadequate protection; the Royal Greenwich Observatory recommends certified solar eclipse glasses, solar telescopes, or indirect projection methods to safely view the Sun.
Devon and Cornwall are identified by the Met Office as prime viewing locations where coverage may reach 96 per cent, with observers advised to find an unobstructed western view during the 6.17pm to 8.06pm event.
According to the Royal Astronomical society, this eclipse is the most impressive visible from the UK in almost 30 years; the next comparable event occurs in 2081, with a total solar eclipse not arriving until 2090.
