Man Drowns While Swimming Near Goldstream Falls on Vancouver Island

Bystanders and paramedics tried to save him after he went under while swimming, as B.C. records a summer spike in drownings.

  • On Monday evening, a 27-year-old man died after a drowning incident at Goldstream Falls near the provincial park campground. West Shore RCMP reported the man went under while swimming near the waterfall and did not resurface.
  • BC Emergency Health Services and the Langford Fire Department responded to the scene with paramedics providing emergency medical care. Despite life-saving efforts by bystanders and emergency personnel, the man died in hospital, said BCEHS paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.
  • Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey warned that Greater Victoria's lakes and rivers can appear calm but possess strong currents. Aubrey advises swimming within personal capabilities, using a buddy system, and wearing properly fitted personal flotation devices.
  • A BC Coroner's report shows 40 accidental drowning deaths from May 1 to July 16, up from 26 during the same period in 2025. BCEHS urged residents to exercise extreme caution around water following the spike.
  • The drowning is the latest in a summer spike across B.C., including the death of a 13-year-old girl at Cultus Lake earlier this month. Aubrey emphasized learning CPR as an essential life-saving skill to prevent future tragedies.
