First Airbus Aircraft Covered in Lufthansa’s “Shark Skin” Ready for Test Flights

- On September 9, 2026, Lufthansa Technik announced a Discover Airlines Airbus A330 will become the first Airbus aircraft worldwide equipped with AeroSHARK, a shark-skin-inspired film designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
- Developed by Lufthansa Technik and Surventis, the film mimics shark skin to reduce drag, lowering fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions following successful approvals for Boeing 777 aircraft in August 2025.
- The Discover Airlines widebody will undergo multiple test flights to secure a Supplemental Type Certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency , requiring extensive documentation, ground tests, and in-service validation.
- As of August 2026, the Lufthansa Group has equipped 22 aircraft with AeroSHARK, with carriers including LATAM, SWISS, Lufthansa, All Nippon , and EVA adopting the technology.
- Lufthansa Technik said the "potential for operational cost savings and substantial environmental benefits is vast," citing around 1,000 A330-200 and-300 aircraft in service worldwide as targets for expansion.
