- In August, the Trump administration awarded a $158 million no-bid contract to Our Rescue, a Utah-based organization formerly known as Operation Underground Railroad, featured in the film 'Sound of Freedom' that promoted QAnon conspiracy theories.
- Our Rescue, run by former Department of Homeland Security official Derek Benner, lacks immigration court experience. Bilal Askaryar, communications director for Acacia, said the organization "has not been in contact with Acacia to transfer over case information."
- Since December, the Department of Health and Human Services has withheld $65 million Congress appropriated for legal representation, forcing the Acacia network of 100 nonprofits to continue representing children without pay.
- Without legal counsel, fewer than 10% of immigrant children win the right to remain in the United States. Roxana Avila-Cimpeanu, deputy director of the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project, said the group represents 600 children but cannot accept new cases.
