LeBron James Is Gone, but Lakers GM Pelinka and Coach Redick Are Excited About the Future
Rob Pelinka said the Lakers’ split with LeBron James was handled professionally as the team rebuilds around Luka Dončić and 26-year-old roster pieces.
- On Thursday, General Manager Rob Pelinka addressed LeBron James' departure during a season-opening news conference, marking the start of a new chapter for the Los Angeles Lakers. James left the franchise this summer, signing a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
- To move beyond the James era, Pelinka explained the Lakers entered the offseason with a three-part "thesis" to build a younger roster around Luka Doncic. The front office pivoted after James informed the organization he would seek a new team.
- The Lakers re-signed Austin Reaves to a four-year, $180 million extension and acquired 7-foot-2 center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz for a four-year, $130 million contract. Additional signings included Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton.
- Head coach JJ Redick plans to utilize a deeper bench and prioritize rim protection with Kessler's arrival. Redick said this group represents "probably the first time in my three years here that I feel like the pieces actually fit together."
- With an average roster age reset to around 26, the Lakers aim to remain a perennial playoff team by maximizing Doncic and Reaves' talents. The franchise has built a sustainable, connected group suited to long-term contention around the 26-year-old franchise cornerstone.
