Landlord withdraws rent increase after tenant strike at Toronto apartment: organizers

- Residents argued the renovations did not improve living conditions and that a 5.4 per cent rent increase was unaffordable, exceeding Ontario's 2.5 per cent maximum allowable increase for rent-controlled buildings in 2025.
- Tenants traveled to Montreal last weekend to confront the building's new owner, who purchased the property in May, over the proposed rent surcharge.
- Bryan Doherty of Parkdale Organize said the strike succeeded because "they formed an independent organization, stepped outside of legal and political convention, and directly confronted their landlord.
