Judge dismisses lawsuit against NCAA over transgender athlete rule

- On Monday, District Court Judge Tiffany Johnson dismissed a lawsuit filed by Riley Gaines against the NCAA, ruling the association does not receive federal financial assistance and thus is not subject to Title regulations.
- Riley Gaines and more than a dozen other athletes filed the lawsuit in March 2024, alleging the NCAA violated Title regulations by permitting transgender women, including Lia Thomas, to compete in Women sports events and use locker rooms.
- Plaintiffs alleged the NCAA received government money through a Defense Department partnership, but Johnson found the NCAA and the Defense Department maintained separate funding streams, establishing the NCAA was not a federal funding recipient.
- "This momentary setback will not deter me or other Women athletes in the least," Gaines said, adding "we will be appealing this decision. I am confident Americans will rally to our side to fight the NCAA."
- The ruling has limited practical effect on current policy, as the NCAA changed its rules in February 2025 to prohibit athletes assigned male at birth from competing on Women teams following a President Donald Trump executive order.
