On 1 August the Italian Government suspended the Agreement on the free movement of persons with Spain, which is the fourth time that Madrid has extended these controls in response to Rome.

Spain extended control of ports and passenger airports from Italy until 22 October, a country which adopted the same measure after more than 70,000 people entered Ceuta in late July.
