India's trade deficit narrows to $26.86 bn in August from $27.2 bn a year earlier
Exports climbed 26.1% to $43.81 billion as imports grew more slowly, narrowing the merchandise trade deficit to about $26.9 billion, officials said.
India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to $26.86 billion in August, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported on Tuesday, significantly beating the $32 billion deficit economists had anticipated.
Exports rose 26.1% to $43.81 billion while imports grew 14.1% to $70.67 billion, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said, driven by demand from the European Union and emerging markets.
Describing the performance as a "herculean feat," Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted resilience despite oil shocks, supply-chain disruptions, and global uncertainty affecting the economy.
Oil surged past $107 a barrel as wholesale inflation accelerated to 9.92% in August, continuing to threaten India's import bill and economic stability.
Amid Middle East instability, India is diversifying export markets through a trade deal with Britain now in force and a broader pact with the European Union moving toward implementation.
