India won one gold and three bronze medals at the International Linguistics Olympiad 2026 in Romania, taking its overall medal tally to 37 since it began participating in 2009.

The competition has also become a pathway for students interested in areas such as AI, natural language processing and language technology. IIIT Hyderabad has noted that several former PLO participants have gone on to pursue higher studies and careers in AI and NLP.
