Crews Battle Almost 200 Wildfires Across US
More than 20,000 people were ordered out in British Columbia as crews battled fast-moving fires fueled by drought and strong winds.
On Saturday, British Columbia declared a province-wide state of emergency as the Bald Range Fire forced thousands to evacuate, while the Spokane Complex Fire displaced 65,000 residents across Washington.
Persistent drought, extreme heat, and strong winds created optimal wildfire environments, fueling more than 100 blazes across British Columbia and over 40 large fires burning throughout the West.
The Bald Range Fire burned nearly 34,000 acres, while the Spokane Complex Fire destroyed around 921 structures; the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed one fatality during evacuation attempts.
British Columbia Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar said 18 aircraft rescued more than 50 individuals, while the National Weather Service warned of "Very Unhealthy" air quality across portions of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming.
Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said authorities are working to return residents home "as soon and as safe as possible," while satellite data from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service continues tracking active fires.
