Arnold Schwarzenegger Inspires a Terminator-Esque Farewell for Retired AI Robots

The company said it trained the robots to leap autonomously, then turned the melted metal into limited-edition artifacts for sale.

  • Figure retired its humanoid F.02 robots by having them jump into molten steel, an homage to an iconic scene in The Terminator and Judgment Day. The San Jose-based company executed the stunt to decommission the fleet efficiently.
  • The company sought disposal ideas on social media after determining that disassembling the hardware would delay future projects. Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested the method, which Founder and chief executive Brett Adcock called a "proper sendoff."
  • After contacting foundries in Mexico and elsewhere, the company found no facility willing to accept robots with lithium-ion batteries. The team traveled to a foundry in Imatra, Finland, with a camera crew to perform the jump.
  • Figure is selling limited-edition artifacts fashioned from the melted robots online. The company claimed the method was more efficient than traditional decommissioning techniques for hardware containing proprietary parts.
  • The robots' self-inflicted demise follows several reports of "suicidal robots" in recent years. Researchers note there is no evidence that artificial intelligence can feel pain, despite ethical questions raised by recent AI experiments.
