Huawei unveils Mate 90 phones, leans on homegrown chip design to offset US curbs
Huawei said the phones use its Kirin 9050 chips and HarmonyOS 7, as it seeks to offset U.S. semiconductor curbs.
- On Thursday, Huawei Technologies unveiled the Mate 90 smartphone series, featuring the homegrown, Android-free HarmonyOS 7 operating system to counter U.S. semiconductor export restrictions.
- Premium models, including the Mate 90 Pro Max, are powered by Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which uses "LogicFolding" to restructure internal wiring for a 31% performance increase.
- Standard and Pro models start at 5,999 yuan and 6,999 yuan respectively, while the Pro Max costs 9,999 yuan; HarmonyOS 7 now supports more than 450,000 apps and services.
- Huawei consumer business chief Richard Yu Chengdong said "I am very pleased to see the launch of a similar product by our peers," welcoming Apple's iPhone Duo entry into the foldable market.
- Rising memory costs have added $200 to each handset's price, and Yu cautioned that "advanced semiconductor capacity remains very limited" in China, constraining supply for the new lineup.
