Huawei unveils Mate 90 phones, leans on homegrown chip design to offset US curbs

  • On Thursday, Huawei Technologies unveiled the Mate 90 smartphone series, featuring the homegrown, Android-free HarmonyOS 7 operating system to counter U.S. semiconductor export restrictions.
  • Premium models, including the Mate 90 Pro Max, are powered by Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which uses "LogicFolding" to restructure internal wiring for a 31% performance increase.
  • Standard and Pro models start at 5,999 yuan and 6,999 yuan respectively, while the Pro Max costs 9,999 yuan; HarmonyOS 7 now supports more than 450,000 apps and services.
  • Huawei consumer business chief Richard Yu Chengdong said "I am very pleased to see the launch of a similar product by our peers," welcoming Apple's iPhone Duo entry into the foldable market.
  • Rising memory costs have added $200 to each handset's price, and Yu cautioned that "advanced semiconductor capacity remains very limited" in China, constraining supply for the new lineup.
