Homemade bomb part of alleged plot on Manchester's Jewish community, court told
Police say the men obtained instructions to make a chlorine bomb and carried out reconnaissance on potential Jewish targets.
Rahman Salehi and Salam Ahmadyan appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday, charged with preparing acts of terrorism targeting Manchester's Jewish community using a homemade explosive device.
Prosecutor Mark Luckett told the court the men researched targets online and conducted hostile reconnaissance of the Jewish Museum and Heaton Park Synagogue, acquiring components to construct an improvised explosive device.
Salehi and Ahmadyan arrived in the UK by small boat in 2020 and 2023 respectively, allegedly acting under instructions from an Iranian individual "most likely operating within Iran," according to court documents.
District Judge Nina Tempia remanded both men in custody until 23 October, when they will appear at the Old Bailey in London for further proceedings.
The Heaton Park Synagogue was attacked last year during a Yom Kippur service, killing Melvin Kravitz and Adrian Daulby, underscoring the Jewish community's ongoing security vulnerabilities.
