Union Cabinet Approves Setting up of J&K High Court Bench in Ladakh: Amit Shah

The new bench is meant to cut long travel for legal remedies and improve access to justice for residents in remote areas.

  • On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Modi, decided to set up a bench of the High Court in Ladakh to improve legal access for residents.
  • Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019 following the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, but currently lacks a separate High Court, requiring residents to travel to Jammu or Srinagar for legal matters.
  • The Centre's move will strengthen judicial access by reducing the need for residents to travel outside the Union Territory, significantly decreasing time required to avail themselves of legal services, Shah said.
  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Cabinet approved four railway projects and a highway project worth a combined Rs 13,041 crore on Wednesday.
  • These projects will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 410 Kms at a cost of approximately Rs 9,450 crore, with completion deadline set for 2030-31.
