'Her Final Gift': How Nathan's Aunty Helped Him to Win One of Australia's Biggest Art Prizes
Nathan Beard’s winning portrait captures his aunty bathing after a fall, and judges praised its emotional intensity and intimate view of caregiving.
On Friday, Melbourne artist Nathan Beard won the 2026 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra for an intimate portrait of his late aunty, Mae Khong.
Beard captured the image earlier this year in Thailand while caring for Khong after a debilitating fall; she died in July at age 84, becoming his second mother after his own mother's 2019 death.
He received $30,000 from the gallery and $20,000 in photographic equipment from Canon Australia; National Portrait Gallery judge Isobel Parker Philip called the portrait 'a really, really tender work.'
Visitors can view the winning portrait alongside a retrospective exhibition of finalists from the past 19 years at the National Portrait Gallery, with the display remaining open until October 11.
This marks the final iteration of the prize in its current format, with the National Portrait Gallery introducing a new model in 2027; Beard plans to use part of the award for an emotional trip to Thailand next month.
