Gray Wolf Dies During Capture Operations in Routt County

The death of wolf 2305 marks the 12th mortality among 25 translocated wolves since 2023, prompting a temporary pause in collaring operations by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

  • On Jan. 28, Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported gray wolf 2305, a three-year-old breeding male of the King Mountain Pack, died during a collaring operation in Routt County.
  • To maintain monitoring, the agency was replacing GPS collars with low batteries on the King Mountain Pack to track wolf activity and deploy conflict-minimization resources, as planned in the Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan.
  • During the operation, field staff found wolf 2305 unresponsive after delivery from the capture site, initiated resuscitation, and CPW performed a necropsy at its Fort Collins Health Lab with an independent pathologist present.
  • CPW has paused capture operations while evaluating the mortality, as Clellan stated, `While guidelines do not necessitate a pause in capture operations following one mortality event, CPW has decided to cease capture operations for the time being while we evaluate the circumstances around this mortality.`
  • Federal review has halted British Columbia wolf imports, and CPW said no new wolves will arrive this year, raising concerns as a 2014 study found 77 percent of packs dissolve after losing breeders.
