Wes Moore dodges commitment to full second term if reelected: Report
Moore left open future ambitions as Cox pressed him on a possible 2028 White House bid and out-of-state travel, including visits to South Carolina and Nevada.
On Tuesday, Gov. Wes Moore declined to commit to serving a full second term if reelected during Maryland's only gubernatorial debate. When pressed for a direct answer, Moore said, "I gave the answer. I am committed to the people of Maryland."
Moore, a Democrat, has faced speculation about a 2028 White House bid and said recently he should be part of the "national conversation" about the Democratic Party's future. A Banner analysis found he spent roughly 1 in 5 days traveling out of state in August.
Republican candidate Dan Cox questioned Moore's record, state budget, and infrastructure projects like the Key Bridge. Moore frequently responded that Cox was "lying," and the two men regularly exchanged personal attacks during the debate.
Moore seized on Cox's relationship with President Donald Trump and his involvement with the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. Moore also touted what he called "record investments" from businesses in Maryland.
Polling shows Moore with a two-to-one advantage over Cox, making Tuesday's debate unlikely to shift the race outcome during this low-key campaign season. The debate served as a rare opportunity for scrutiny.
