GOP lawmaker: Nixon was ‘couped out of office,’ ‘framed’ during Watergate
Rep. Riley Moore alleged a deep-state framing of Richard Nixon at a recent summit, aligning with broader Republican efforts to rehabilitate the former president's legacy.
On Thursday, Rep. Riley Moore declared at the Richard Nixon Foundation's Grand Strategy Summit that President Richard Nixon was "framed" in the Watergate scandal, comparing Nixon's downfall to challenges faced by President Donald Trump.
These comments are part of a revisionist GOP effort to absolve Nixon by framing him as a victim of the "deep state," linking his legacy to controversies surrounding the Trump presidency to release Trump from accountability.
Following a presentation to the Justice Department by former Nixon aide Geoff Shepard, who alleged a concerted effort caused Nixon's downfall, the department clarified the session was not a formal investigation.
Vice President JD Vance similarly argued in June at the Nixon Presidential Library that the same "deep state" forces that targeted Nixon attempted to undermine Trump during his first administration.
Convicted on 34 felony counts, Trump has repeatedly claimed he is the target of a "political witch hunt," aligning his legal battles with the narratives presented by Moore and Vance.
