Google Rolls Out Improved SynthID AI Content Detector, Now Available Globally

The free tool supports images, video and audio, and Google said people now make 1 million verification requests a day.

  • On Tuesday, Google launched a public website allowing anyone to verify whether media is AI-generated by checking for SynthID watermarks at synthid.com.
  • Previously restricted to researchers and "media professionals" for testing last year, the company developed the detector for more than a year before expanding public access.
  • The tool supports formats including JPG, MP4, and WAV while identifying content from Google, OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao models, with users making 1 million requests daily.
  • Google says support for images created with Apple Intelligence is coming "soon," though the detector cannot distinguish between entirely AI-created and AI-edited media.
  • Limitations persist as watermarks can be stripped from content; however, Google is "continuously working on extending our partnerships to allow detecting more generated media.
