GM gives its most important trucks a new UI—and includes CarPlay

  • On Tuesday, General Motors announced a redesigned infotainment interface for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks, designed to be "simple, fast and predictable."
  • J.D. Power's August 20 Tech Experience Index Study found overcomplicated screens distract drivers; only 6% of owners use their screen every time they drive, prompting the redesign.
  • The interface introduces a "window-in-window" feature allowing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to coexist with native GM functions while retaining physical buttons for climate, navigation, and towing controls.
  • Colin McCormick, a GM staff product manager, said the design aims to "compliment" smartphone usage rather than compete with it, reducing cognitive load through proactive control surfacing.
  • General Motors plans to launch the software on its bestselling trucks to gather substantial customer feedback before expanding the system "across the broader portfolio" of its vehicles over time.
