German broker Scalable opens investment platform to major AI chatbots

The Munich broker said the service is a first step as it tests whether AI assistants can improve returns and attract more trading flow.

  • On Tuesday, Munich-based broker Scalable Capital announced its more than 1 million account holders can use ChatGPT and Claude to analyze portfolios and execute trades, marking the first time a European bank has integrated external AI platforms for direct trading.
  • Co-CEO Erik Podzuweit framed the launch as a "first step," acknowledging that his hypothesis on AI improving average returns remains to be demonstrated, while Scalable opted to integrate external platforms before building its own internal assistant.
  • Managing more than €60 billion in assets, the broker faces complex regulatory questions regarding MiFID suitability rules and liability, while Scalable stated that security measures protect customer accounts without detailing them publicly.
  • Competitors like Trade Republic and Revolut face pressure from this strategic shift, as Scalable attempts to capture user flow by bypassing its own app to reach customers on general-purpose assistants rather than branded platforms.
  • Executing trades through chatbots introduces future risks, including prompt injection and model misunderstandings, making the gap between convenient portfolio summaries and automated trade execution a critical area for regulatory and security oversight.
