Former Carney adviser, CMHC head named inaugural chair of Build Canada Homes

The former CMHC chief will steer the new housing agency until at least eight directors are named, as it advances non-market housing projects.

  • On Monday, Ottawa appointed Evan Siddall, former Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation CEO, as the inaugural chair of Build Canada Homes as the agency transitioned to Crown corporation status requiring independent board governance.
  • As a former special adviser to Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Bank, Siddall will temporarily exercise board powers unilaterally until the government appoints at least eight directors under transitional provisions of the Build Canada Homes Act.
  • During his 2014–2021 tenure leading CMHC, Siddall helped develop more than 30 housing programs, including the National Housing Co-Investment Fund and Rental Construction Financing Initiative. His recent roles span the Alberta Investment Management Corporation and BMO Capital Markets.
  • Build Canada Homes has committed to nearly 17,000 units through 17 partnerships, with more than 1,900 homes already under construction. CEO Ana Bail stated Siddall's appointment provides the governance foundations needed to advance the agency's mandate.
  • Focused on non-market housing, the agency supports projects through loans and contributions while encouraging innovative construction and Canadian materials. Siddall's extensive policy experience positions him to guide the agency's scaling operations toward its affordable housing objectives.
