Fast food from the US and China catches on in both countries
U.S. brands are adding thousands of China stores while Chinese chains open dozens of U.S. locations amid slower domestic growth and fierce competition.
- American and Chinese fast-food chains are aggressively expanding into each other's markets, creating a two-way cultural bridge. While KFC continues growing in China, Chinese chains like Mixue and Luckin Coffee establish footholds in America.
- Drawn by the massive customer base, American brands operate thousands of locations in China. The Kentucky-born KFC chain, which entered Beijing in 1987, counts about 13,000 restaurants in China versus around 3,750 in America.
- Chinese chains increasingly target the American market to escape intense competition at home. Heytea operates 40 American locations while Luckin Coffee, which overtook Starbucks as China's top coffee brand, maintains 20 stores in New York.
- Mixue, one of the world's largest chains with more than 53,000 locations, opened its first three American stores in December. A customer held an ice cream cone outside a Mixue in Sunnyvale, Calif., on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
- To succeed, chains must adapt menus to local tastes, such as KFC serving congee in China. Despite geopolitical tensions, Shaun Rein of the Shanghai-based China Market Research Group notes Chinese consumers still demand American brands, while Luckin Coffee CEO Jinyi Guo told investors the American market "represents one of our important long-term opportunities.
