Two-Legged Delivery Robots to Appear in South Yorkshire - Here's Where
Evri says the robot is meant to support couriers and test last-mile deliveries in residential areas, with 96.2% of participants saying they enjoyed it.
In a European-first trial, Evri and Refined Robotics have deployed a two-legged delivery robot named Iris on the streets of Barnsley to test autonomous parcel delivery capabilities.
Barnsley was selected as the UK's first Tech Town; unlike wheeled robots recently seen in Sheffield, Iris features legs designed to navigate stairs and uneven ground.
Capable of carrying about 20kg, Iris travels at speeds of up to 3.7mph ; Refined Robotics founder Nick Hafner reported that 96.2% of trial participants enjoyed the robot.
Following vandalism of wheeled robots in Sheffield, Evri implemented strict safety measures for the Barnsley trial, confirming a human handler will accompany Iris at all times.
Innovation Delivery Manager Adrian Berry stated the technology is intended to support couriers rather than replace them, serving as a complementary service for fashion parcel deliveries.
