- District Judge Dabney Friedrich postponed the federal trial of Al-Marimi on Monday, citing the discovery of new evidence that defense attorneys must examine in the nearly 40-year-old case.
- The case concerns the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie, killing 270 people from 21 countries, including 190 Americans, 43 from the United Kingdom, and 35 Syracuse University students.
- Prosecutors allege Al-Marimi, a Libyan intelligence official, carried out the bombing under Moammar Gadhafi, reportedly transporting a suitcase bomb through Malta to Frankfurt and London before loading it onto Flight 103.
- Friedrich cited "the need for the defense to determine how best to defend this case" as reason for postponement and scheduled a Sept. 1 hearing in Washington to discuss the status.
- Two other Libyan intelligence agents were previously tried by a panel of Scottish judges on a former military base in the Netherlands, making this the first U.S. trial for the 1988 bombing.
