ITV Scraps Emmerdale and Coronation Street Tonight in TV Schedule Change
ITV will air live coverage of the EFL Cup first-round match instead, with Emmerdale and Coronation Street returning to their usual slots on Sunday.
On Friday, August 7, ITV1 is preempting Emmerdale and Coronation Street to broadcast the EFL Cup match between Middlesbrough and Wrexham, disrupting the usual evening schedule.
Introduced in January 2026, ITV's 'soaps power hour' typically features 30-minute episodes on weeknights, but the broadcaster frequently adjusts schedules to accommodate live sporting events.
Coverage for the Middlesbrough versus Wrexham match runs from 7:30pm until 10:25pm, overriding the soaps' standard slots and preventing early release episodes on ITVX tonight.
Viewers can resume their regular schedule on Sunday, August 9, when Emmerdale returns at 7pm, followed by Coronation Street at 7:30pm in their normal slots.
Actor John Thomson recently noted that traditional commercial stations face challenges as viewers migrate to subscription platforms, highlighting the broader pressure broadcasters face in prioritizing live sports.
