Free Bus Pass Warning as Another State Pension Age Change Means Longer Wait
Thousands will wait longer for free travel as eligibility now tracks the rising State Pension age, with some people needing to be 66 years and 7 months old.
The DWP confirmed that free bus pass eligibility in England is rising to 67, meaning many people will no longer automatically qualify for free travel on their 66th birthday.
Legislation known as The Pensions Act raises the State Pension age from 66 to 67. The Department stated, "There are 2 broad categories of people eligible for a statutory concession – older people and eligible disabled people."
Staggered by birth date, eligibility now requires some in England to wait several months beyond their 66th birthday. People born after March 5, 1961 will reach full eligibility at 67.
Residents of London and Merseyside can still access local concessionary travel schemes at earlier ages, remaining unaffected by the national changes applying to the rest of England.
People can check their exact eligibility date using online tools provided by The Department. This process ensures the State Pension age and bus pass availability remain aligned for all future claimants.
