2 people killed, including a student, after Florida school bus rolls over in crash, sheriff says
Nearly 40 people were on the bus when an oncoming car crossed the center line and triggered the multivehicle crash, authorities said.
On Monday, October 5, 2026, a Winter Haven High School bus overturned on Lucerne Park Road after a Chevy Malibu crossed the center line, killing two people.
Sheriff Grady Judd described the collision as a "reverse PIT" maneuver after the car struck the bus's rear tandem wheels, causing the vehicle to lose traction and overturn.
Thirty-Nine people were aboard the bus, including 37 students; the crash killed a 10th-grade girl and the driver of a silver Jeep, with one patient remaining in critical condition.
More than 100 emergency personnel responded to the scene. Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Fred Heid praised their swift action, urging motorists to remain vigilant as schools remain open.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit continues investigating the crash, with a follow-up press conference expected on Tuesday to provide additional updates.
