Drones hit Russia's gas hinterland in northern Siberia for the first time
Regional officials said no one was hurt and the damage is still being assessed after the drone strike set off a fire at the facility.
- On Wednesday, an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy caught fire following a drone attack, regional Governor Dmitry Artyukhov reported, marking the first such strike on Russia's natural gas hinterland.
- Located in the Yamal-Nenets region of Western Siberia, Novy Urengoy is Russia's unofficial gas capital, holding estimated reserves of 26.5 trillion cubic meters as of 2020—enough to cover global demand for more than six years.
- The facility sits some 3,000 km from the Ukrainian border; State-run energy company Gazprom did not reply to a request to comment on the attack.
- Artyukhov stated on Telegram that "Most importantly, there were no fatalities or injuries. The extent and nature of the damage are being determined."
- Gazprom previously exported gas from Yamal to Western Europe until ties broke down following the start of Russia's war in Ukraine in 2022, reshaping the region's energy landscape.
