Germany Extends Controversial Border Checks at Dutch Border for Another Six Months

Controls at all German external borders will run for another six months as officials cite continued pressure from illegal migration.

  • Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced on Wednesday that Germany will extend controls at all external borders for six months until mid-March, with the extension officially registered with the Commission.
  • Controls have been active at all German external borders since September 16th, 2024. "The developments at Europe's external borders show that the push back of illegal migration still needs controls," Dobrindt told the Bild newspaper.
  • Separately, Dobrindt opened a drone defence research centre in Hecklingen on Tuesday, warning that an explosives-laden drone found at Leipzig earlier this month was no "isolated case."
  • Located about 200 kilometres south of Berlin, the facility focuses on detecting unmanned aerial vehicles. Dobrindt said it "will constitute a central element of the security architecture in the face of the hybrid threat."
  • Federal Minister Justice Stefanie Hubig is campaigning to change tenancy laws to facilitate air conditioning installation. She noted that "clear and practicable regulations" are required for both landlords and tenants when structural changes occur.
