Discord Reveals Age-Check Rollout with Massive Changes to How It Works
Discord says 90% of users should need no further action as it adds privacy-focused verification for accounts that cannot be automatically confirmed as adults.
- Starting Wednesday, Discord is rolling out new age verification measures to all users, automatically sorting accounts into age groups based on usage patterns without accessing message content.
- Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy explained the system uses "signals" like account tenure and activity data to estimate age. The company delayed these plans in February following user backlash over privacy risks from biometric scans.
- For an expected 90 percent of users, no action is required as they are automatically placed into the Adult Age Group or Teen Age Group. Those categorized as Unconfirmed can manually verify their age.
- Unconfirmed users may verify their status via Stripe, Google Wallet, Apple App Store, or the AgeKey service, avoiding biometric scans. This addresses privacy concerns after a third-party vendor breach exposed 70,000 users' data last year.
- Teen and Unconfirmed accounts face restrictions including limited profile visibility and message requests sent to a separate inbox. These protections also prevent access to age-restricted content and bot commands.
