Salmonella Outbreak Tied To Jalapeños Hits 27 States
The CDC and FDA traced the outbreak to peppers from Sinaloa, with 36 people hospitalized and recalls expanding across restaurant supply chains.
Federal health officials are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, that has sickened 345 people across 27 states and hospitalized 36.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration traced the outbreak strain to jalapeños distributed by California-based Coast Citrus Distributors, which initiated a product recall.
Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba were identified as illness cluster sites; Chipotle switched jalapeño suppliers on July 20, while Qdoba stopped serving the ingredient entirely on July 28.
On Sunday, Taylor Farms recalled products made with fresh jalapeños from the distributor, while the FDA continues investigating whether contaminated peppers reached grocery retailers beyond restaurant and wholesale channels.
The CDC advises consumers to check inventory for recalled peppers and practice food safety, including washing hands for at least 20 seconds and thoroughly cooking ingredients to prevent further spread.
