Dallas Police to Meet Flock CEO on Camera Safeguards Wednesday
Dallas police seek safeguards as more than 300 Flock cameras remain online for 90 days amid privacy concerns and state funding limits.
Following a Wednesday meeting with Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley, the Dallas Police Department secured a 90-day extension keeping over 300 cameras operational after a state funding freeze threatened their removal.
Governor Greg Abbott halted state funding for the cameras in late August, forcing cities to shutter hundreds of devices as municipalities scrambled to maintain surveillance networks previously reliant on state grants.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated the agreement includes new auditing safeguards and data policies, as the department balances technology utility in solving crimes with concerns regarding surveillance misuse.
At least two other cities and one county—Addison, New Braunfels, and Johnson County—also secured extensions, while El Paso voted to tear down its 150 cameras following the funding block.
With the November 3 election approaching, local officials suggested the funding freeze may be politically motivated, as departments now face pressure to identify new revenue sources before the 90-day extension ends.
