Culture and ethics meets tech: UCLA debuts country’s first bachelor’s in digital humanities

UCLA is launching the nation's first digital humanities department and bachelor's degree this fall, combining classical humanities with technical tools to analyze an increasingly AI-enhanced world.
Due to high student interest, Alexandra Minna Stern, dean of the UCLA College Division of Humanities, transformed the popular minor into a major after campus professors taught the discipline for more than two decades.
Students will explore how technology shapes culture, including ethical training for generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Professor Todd Presner noted this understanding is essential for modern humanities.
Local partnerships, including with the Los Angeles-based Wende Museum, will provide internship opportunities. Stern aims to secure additional arrangements allowing students to apply classroom learning in professional settings.
With four staff members in place, Stern expects 50 to 100 students to eventually declare the major, aiming to build the program's foundation this year.
