Could zoos be doing more to protect endangered species?
Most fish and animals in U.K. zoos and aquariums are nonnative and not classified as threatened, which weakens conservation goals according to scientists.
Fewer than one-third of captive vertebrates in the U.K. are globally threatened, only 9% are native to the U.K., and just 2% are high conservation priority species.
U.K. zoos mainly keep large, popular species to attract visitors, but these species often are not top priorities for conservation breeding or reintroduction.
Researcher Justin Lennon says British zoos contribute to preserving native species but could increase diversity and population sizes of threatened species in their collections.
