Coroner: Remains Found at East Baton Rouge Landfill Belong to Ja'Derrius Minnieweather
Investigators used DNA to confirm the teen’s identity after a five-week landfill search that covered 4,000 tons of material, police said.
On Wednesday, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office confirmed that remains discovered in a landfill are those of 15-year-old Ja'Derrius Minnieweather, identified using DNA comparison.
Law enforcement crews spent five weeks combing through 4,000 tons of material at the East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill in Zachary, where Minnieweather's body was reportedly dumped on June 22.
Police arrested 51-year-old Maurice Parms on June 22, charging him with first-degree murder. Investigators allege Parms beat Minnieweather to death following a disagreement over his inappropriate conduct toward a 16-year-old girl.
Parms is held without bond at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. District Attorney Hillar Moore stated his office is discussing the death penalty, noting it is standard for first-degree murder cases.
Search teams will continue processing the landfill site until Friday to determine if additional evidence remains. The operation utilized FBI Laboratory resources and specialized forensic analysis to conclude the exhaustive effort.
