Concern Grows in Israel as Mother, Daughter Mysteriously Vanish in Vienna
Israel’s embassy in Austria is seeking tips as police and volunteers search for the pair, with no confirmed lead after five days.
- Israeli tourists Mali Yahalomi, 50, and her daughter Liel, 23, vanished Friday after arriving in Vienna during a European vacation, failing to board their scheduled return flight to Israel on Tuesday. Israel's embassy issued a public appeal while Austrian authorities and Vienna's Jewish community joined search efforts.
- After traveling from Prague to Vienna by train on Friday, the women sent relatives a video confirming safe arrival at their rented Booking.com apartment, exchanging final messages at 5:45 pm before Shabbat. Since Sunday morning, all subsequent messages went unanswered with WhatsApp showing only single check marks.
- Authorities discovered the hotel room completely empty with all belongings removed. Vienna Chabad emissary Rabbi Reuven Timsit said investigators checked the local Chabad center, where more than 400 travelers had registered for Shabbat meals, but neither woman appeared on registration lists or security cameras.
- Vienna Chabad emissary Timsit described the situation as a 'very troubling turning point' with all local authorities mobilized. The family's crowdfunding campaign raised approximately NIS 80,000 by Wednesday toward a NIS 300,000 target, while Ronen flew to Vienna to join the search.
- Despite an expanding search, Timsit said there remains 'absolutely no lead explaining what happened to them.' Austrian police cited privacy regulations while noting no indication of terrorism or antisemitic motives, though investigators face obstacles including Europe's open borders and lack of phone location or credit card data.
