Conservatives Pledge to Remove £100,000 Childcare Threshold
The plan would extend 30 hours of free care to all parents working at least 16 hours a week and cost about £700 million a year, the party said.
On Saturday, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch pledged to scrap the £100,000 childcare earnings cap, eliminating the 'cliff edge' that penalizes higher earners for working.
Under current regulations, families lose 30 hours of free weekly childcare if one parent's income exceeds £100,000, a rule Mrs Badenoch described as 'absurd' and a disincentive to work.
Party officials estimate the policy will cost £700 million annually, proposing to fund it by reducing headcount at arm's-length bodies such as the Environment Agency to generate £1.6 billion in savings by 2029-30.
A Labour Party spokesperson criticized the plan as helping higher earners, while Tories argued removing the threshold is 'both pro-family and pro-growth' to boost economic participation.
Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith will present this proposal as a 'first step' in a broader tax reform agenda during his speech at the Conservative Party Conference on Monday.
