Scots Tory leader to decry independence and FM’s summit with Sinn Fein
Findlay will accuse Swinney of siding with Sinn Féin and warning that China, Russia and Iran would exploit a divided United Kingdom.
On Sunday, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay will address a party conference in Birmingham, where he plans to label Scottish independence "irresponsible" and condemn First Minister John Swinney's recent meeting with Sinn Féin.
Findlay is expected to criticize Swinney for forming a pact with Sinn Féin, citing the group's history with the IRA and the 1984 bombing that killed five people, including Muriel Maclean, wife of former Scottish Conservative president Sir Donald Maclean.
Regarding national security, Findlay will claim totalitarian regimes want a divided United Kingdom, alleging Swinney supports a Chinese wind turbine factory in the Highlands despite security concerns and that nationalist social media activity includes Iranian bots.
In response to the speech, SNP MSP Alex Kerr stated, "Russell Findlay is completely obsessed with the SNP, so it's no surprise he'd rather spend his conference speech talking about us."
Defending the independence movement, Kerr argued, "Nothing will strengthen Scotland's standing in the world more than becoming an independent country and rejoining the international community in our own right for the first time in over 300 years.
