CJP warns of Jantar Mantar 2.0 as thousands attend Mumbai protest seeking CEC's ouster
On Friday, October 2, 2026, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah joined the Cockroach Janta Party protest at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, backing the group's demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
An Indian Express investigation revealed Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months regarding the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Meeting CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke at the protest site, Shah offered support for the movement, which organizers termed a "Jail Bharo Andolan." He previously stated, "Asking questions is our right."
Despite Mumbai Police denying permission for the gathering citing a 2013 Bombay High Court order, the protest proceeded with tightened security. Dipke announced expansion to Goa, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
The campaign culminates in a sit-in at Delhi's Jantar Mantar later this month, where the CJP demands a transparent Election Commissioner appointment process and a freeze on the 2025 electoral roll.
