Mother of Woman Charged in 7-Year-Old Girl's Stabbing Death Apologizes to Victim's Family
Prosecutors say Shavon Gayden had multiple prior arrests and an outstanding warrant before the attack, and bystanders detained her until police arrived.
Shavon Gayden, 48, faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly stabbing 7-year-old Edi Mari Hernandez-Chacon on Saturday morning on the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago.
After threatening a store employee over a cellphone bill, Gayden approached the children and allegedly lunged at the 16-year-old sister before stabbing Hernandez. Bystanders chased and detained Gayden until police arrived.
Court records show Gayden has an extensive criminal history, including a 2023 conviction for assaulting a CTA bus driver and two years of probation. Her mother stated she struggled for years to secure mental health treatment for her daughter.
Scheduled for a detention hearing on Wednesday, Gayden did not appear in court Monday because she remains hospitalized with a head injury from being subdued. She also faces an outstanding warrant for a probation violation.
Community members gathered Sunday to honor Hernandez, whom relatives remembered as a happy child who loved drawing and playing with siblings. Mayor Brandon Johnson and Alderman Michelle Harris expressed condolences, with Harris calling the stabbing a 'heinous act.
