Dome Fire in Yosemite Determined to Have Been Caused by Abandoned Campfire
Officials said the blaze has burned about 5,400 acres and is 34% contained as firefighters continue work overnight.
The Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park has grown to 5,585 acres and reached 39% containment as of Wednesday, according to Inciweb. The blaze, sparked by an abandoned campfire, continues burning near the park's southern entrance.
Two helicopter pilots, Greg King and Ryan Cutter, died on September 20 while fighting the blaze during water bucket drops in Mariposa County. A procession was held Tuesday for the men.
Officials urged anyone visiting the Chilnualna Falls Trail between September 9 and 15 to contact the National Park Service. Fire spokesperson Benjamin Cosset requested tips at 653-0009 regarding the abandoned campfire.
Approximately 250 firefighters are working overnight shifts to strengthen containment lines along the fire's edge. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity have slowed the fire's spread, though Glacier Point Road remains closed.
Fire restrictions have remained in place at elevations at or below 8,000 feet since August 1 to prevent future incidents. The National Park Service continues managing the blaze's ongoing impact on the wilderness.
