Californians blast Trump remark that Iran could 'take out' Los Angeles, San Diego
California leaders condemned Trump’s remarks as dangerous after he suggested Americans should accept the loss of two major cities to help defeat Iran.
On Monday, President Donald Trump suggested at a Grand Island, Nebraska, rally that the destruction of Los Angeles and San Diego by Iran would be "a small price to pay" for victory in the US-Israeli war.
California Governor Gavin Newsom called the President "deranged," while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass labeled the comments "dangerous," arguing they treated residents as expendable collateral damage.
Tensions between the administration and California intensified as Newsom linked the rhetoric to Trump's deployment of 700 Marines to the state last year during immigration enforcement clashes.
The White House dismissed the backlash as a "media freakout" that "is not rooted in reality," while Representative Kevin Kiley joined Democrats in questioning the President's comments.
With control of Congress on the line in November, the midterms will weigh heavily on the final two years of the President's term as voters decide if the election matters.
Californians have heavily criticized Trump after he made a remark during a speech stating that if Iran were to attack major cities like Los Angeles or San Diego, it would be a "small price to pay" for national security.
