Cowardly Killer Who Abused and Stole From Victim Gets Life - but Refuses to Hear It
The ruling reinstates the original 14-year term after the Court of Appeal cut the sentence by almost 18 months.
On Wednesday, the High Court overturned the Court of Appeal's decision, reinstating the 70 per cent custodial sentence for the teenager who murdered Emma Lovell on Boxing Day 2022.
Lovell was fatally stabbed during a home invasion in North Lakes, an attack that catalyzed Queensland's "adult crime, adult time" legislative reforms under the Liberal National government.
High Court justices found the sentencing judge correctly denied "special circumstances," ruling the teenager's early guilty plea occurred against an "overwhelmingly strong Crown case."
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington called the ruling "historic," while Lee Lovell said he was "really pleased" a four-year ordeal was finally over, reinstating nearly 18 months to the sentence.
The teenager remains in detention with more than six years left to serve, a decision Frecklington noted marks the first successful sentencing appeal of its type in two decades.
