Bird Flu Suspected as 1,000 Birds Found Dead in Three Mass Mortality Events
Authorities said 177 H5 bird flu cases have been confirmed in South Australia as surveillance teams investigate new mass bird deaths and penguin carcasses.
Three mass bird mortality events believed to be linked to the H5N1 avian flu strain have been recorded on islands off SA. In a separate event, more than two dozen penguins have been found dead in Tasmania, with testing now underway.
In South Australia, the deaths of more than 1,000 wild birds are thought to be linked to the H5N1 strain of avian influenza virus that is spreading across the country.
