Ben Affleck Reveals Real Reason Ex-Wife Jennifer Garner Turned Down Role in His Movie Animals
Affleck said Garner passed on the wife role because she did not want to play his on-screen partner after production delays shifted the cast.
Director and actor Ben Affleck revealed in an Entertainment Weekly interview published September 14 that his ex-wife Jennifer Garner declined an opportunity to co-star in his upcoming crime thriller Animals.
Initially, Affleck hoped to cast Garner and his longtime friend Matt Damon as the leads, but production delays and Damon's commitment to The Odyssey forced a significant casting shakeup.
Stepping into the lead role of mayoral candidate Mark Kimball himself, Affleck approached Garner about playing his onscreen wife. Garner refused, saying "We don't wanna do that. You just get baggage."
Kerry Washington was ultimately cast as Kimball's wife in the thriller. Affleck, 54, expressed gratitude for his friendship with Garner and said he remains open to future collaborations.
The thriller Animals, which Affleck also directs, premieres October 9 on Netflix and select US cinemas, featuring a star-studded cast including Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, and Luis Gerardo Mendez.
