Bears QB Caleb Williams Avoids Serious Injury to Hamstring
Tests showed no major damage, and the Bears have not ruled out Williams for next Monday’s game against Philadelphia.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams avoided a major hamstring injury during Sunday's 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, according to tests confirmed Monday. The injury initially raised concerns but proved less severe than feared.
Williams suffered the injury in the fourth quarter while scrambling on a 1st-and-goal attempt from the 6-yard line. Initial reports suggested a Grade 1 hamstring strain before further testing revealed the damage was minimal.
Head coach Ben Johnson told reporters Williams was in "good spirits" after the game and expressed particular relief that the quarterback's knee remained uninjured. Johnson said, "I'm actually happy it's nothing with the knee."
The Bears have not ruled Williams out for the Week 3 "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles next Monday. Medical staff continue monitoring the injury following additional testing completed Monday.
Should Williams be sidelined, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent would assume the starting role. The Bears signed Bagent to a $10 million extension and maintain three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster for depth.
